Free Hands-On Seminar on Disaster Prevention Methods You Can Take in Your Area
Shinagawa Disaster Prevention Experience Hall

You never know when a fire or other major disaster will strike. That’s why it’s a good idea to make regular preparations so you can take the appropriate actions in virtually any situation without panicking. In this issue we’ll talk about Shinagawa Disaster Prevention Experience Hall, a hands-on experience-type facility designed to help residents improve their knowledge about disasters and disaster prevention. Please take advantage of this facility to enhance your awareness about disaster prevention and bolster your ability to act coolly and intelligently in the face of disaster.

Admission: Free of charge
Hours: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Closed: Mondays, Saturdays, national holidays and during the year-end/New Year’s holidays

First-Stage Fire-Extinguishing Experience

Using a fire extinguisher for training and an indoor fire hydrant, you’ll learn how to aim water properly at the source of “flames” projected on a screen.



 

Theater Room

You can watch a video about disaster prevention projected on a large screen. The video is 25 minutes long, and there are three parts. There are subtitles in English, Chinese and Korean.
Part 1: Simulations of damage and disaster that might occur when disasters strike in Shinagawa City.
Part 2: An educational video of interviews with victims of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake.
Part 3: Disaster countermeasures in Shinagawa City, and things we can do in our immediate neighborhood.


 
First-Aid Experience

Using a training doll, you’ll practice cardiopulmonary resuscitation techniques—such as applying chest compressions and practice using AED equipment—to learn first-aid procedures that you can employ at home or at your workplace.


 

Learn How to Help Evacuate Those Needing Special Attention

Using a training doll, get hands-on experience at transferring someone from a bed to a wheelchair and in a wheelchair. Using equipment such as goggles and weights, you’ll also find out how it feels to be a person that requires special attention. You can even practice running along imitation bumpy roads, and learn how to operate a wheelchair in a disaster-struck area.

Since the touch panel at each corner is multilingual in English, Chinese, Korean, even if you are not familiar with Japanese you can learn by experience without worry. We hope you’ll drop by for a visit!
