City News Shinagawa

Shinagawa City prospered as the first post town on the former Tokaido Road in the old days, and now it serves as Tokyo’s front entrance, a town where both newness and nostalgia exist in harmony. The city has many attractions, including shopping streets overflowing with old-fashioned downtown atmosphere, colorful parks, and night views of high-rise buildings. Behind all these attractions are city residents who poured their energy into the revitalization and its lively atmosphere. A web magazine called Tsunago Shinagawa (Let’s Connect Shinagawa) was launched last year to spotlight such residents and convey the charms and energy of Shinagawa City and its people. It describes the connections that go beyond the boundaries of generations and communities as well as the deep appeal of each community. Please read it!

In the 8 issues published since last February, the web magazine has interviewed 18 people and introduced their organizations with photographs (updated on an ongoing basis). In this issue, we spotlight 2 issues.

#06 Shinagawa City Shopping Streets Joint Association

Toshio Shima, chairperson
Kotaro Tamano, secretary-general

  Togoshi-Ginza Shopping Street

The Shinagawa City Shopping Streets Joint Association is composed of 67 of the 104 shopping streets of Shinagawa City (as of March 2019). Shopping streets represent one of Shinagawa City’s major points of appeal, and the association conducts research on the need to enliven these areas.
Shima, the chairperson, has been involved with the association since 1991, and has nurtured the horizontal ties between these shopping streets. Tamano, the secretary-general, visits shopping streets on a daily basis to listen to their concerns and ideas, and supports them and spreads information about each shop. Shopping streets, it is said, cannot remain lively unless each shop continues to shine. Please read how they work together in the web magazine.

#07 Yashio Festival

Katsushige Tanji, chairperson of Shinagawa City Town Council & Resident Association Federation/Yashio Resident Association Federation
Takayuki Hashiguchi, wadaiko (traditional Japanese drum) performer

  Yashio Festival

Yashio―a community blessed with rich greenery and plenty of waterways―did not have shopping streets, shrines or temples, and social connections among the community were relatively weak when the town was founded. Under those circumstances, the community created the Yashio Festival to establish the culture of our town and make it a true “hometown”.
Tanji has lived in Yashio since 1983, and has been working on the Yashio Festival in corporation with the residents. The Yashio Taiko no Kai club was founded in 1985 by Shiro Hashiguchi, the father of wadaiko performer Takayuki Hashiguchi who represents the club now. After 35 years of activity, wadaiko has taken root today as part of the culture of the town.
Please read about the activities of these two men, who say Yashio has been transformed from a new town without its own history or culture to “My Hometown Yashio.”
