National Pension Premiums for Prenatal and Postpartum Periods Exempted from April 2019

Eligibility: Category 1 insured persons of National Pension (self-employed, students, part-time workers, unemployed, etc.) that are giving birth from February 1, 2019 onward
Note: Here, “birth” refers to a pregnancy that is 85 days (four months) or longer, and includes stillbirths, miscarriages and premature births.
Notification period: Reception starts from April 2019, and notification can be made from 6 months before the expected date of birth.
Exemption period: 4 months, including the month before the month of the expected/actual birth date; in the case of multiple births, the period is 6 months, including the 3 months before the month of the expected/actual delivery date.
Handling of the exemption period: You need not pay national pension premiums during the exemption period upon application, but the amount will be reflected when calculating the amount of your Old-Age Basic Pension.
Items necessary for application: Personal ID such as your passport or residence card, pension notebook, Maternal and Child Health Handbook (if you file an application prior to birth), etc.

1. A birth certificate, etc. may be necessary for filing a notification after giving birth.
