Kadomatsu Decorations

Kadomatsu (which literally means “gate pine”) is a traditional New Year’s decoration made of bamboo and pine that is placed at the gate of homes during the New Year’s holidays. Since it was thought that God dwelled in the treetops in ancient times, the kadomatsu was displayed at the gate of homes to welcome the toshigami (Shinto god) who would bless the home with safety and a rich harvest. Nowadays you’ll also see kadomatsu displayed in front of shrines and companies. In Shinagawa City, you can see a kadomatsu at Togoshi Park (2-1 Yutakacho).
