Discovering the Attractive Qualities of Shinagawa!

Let’s Explore Shinagawa’s History—Yashio area

“One Hundred Scenes of Shinagawa” were selected by city residents.

Yashio area was newly created on a landfill. People started moving into Yashio Park Town in 1983, and about 12,000 people live there now. Being right next to the sea, Yashio has aspects that make it different from surrounding communities.
The Yashio Bridge and Kamome Bridge stretch over the Keihin Canal is directing the scenery of the waterfront with its unique appearance. Walk the path of greenery and through Nagisa Forest along the canal, and you can feel the scent of the tide while living in the city. Then there is Sports Forest, a comprehensive sports facility with track and field areas and ball grounds.

 

Kamome Bridge and Keihin Canal

(5 Yashio to 1 Katsushima)
Among the three bridges that straddle the Keihin Canal and reach the Yashio apartment complex, Kamome Bridge is the only one built especially for pedestrians. You can enjoy views of the spacious sky and the Keihin Canal. This cable-stayed bridge, completed in 1986, was highly praised for its superior technology and consideration for the surrounding scenery, receiving an award from the Japan Construction Engineers’ Association.

Scenic Museum of Maritime Science

(Higashi-Yashio)
This maritime science museum opened in 1974 with the theme “The Culture of the Sea and Ships.” The main building, which is shaped like a large passenger vessel on Tokyo Bay, is a bay landmark. Although the main building is currently closed, you can enjoy exhibitions at the annex and the outdoor exhibition area. Neighboring Shiokaze Park will serve as the venue for beach volleyball during the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

Yashio Apartment Complex and Keihin Canal Green Way

The Keihin Canal Green Way, which stretches about 2.5 km along the canal at the foot of the Yashio apartment complex, is a promenade area by the waterway where you can feel the sea breeze. You can stroll in the sunshine filtered through the foliage and walk along the water’s edge while watching the monorail. The large trees and seasonal flowers here create a relaxing oasis.

Sports Forest (Oi Central Seaside Park)

This is a Tokyo metropolitan comprehensive sports facility with a track and field area, ball grounds, baseball fields and tennis courts. Sports Forest will serve as the venue for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 field hockey competition.

Bullet Train Vehicle Base

(3 Yashio)
Bullet train carriages gather at this base in Oi. You can see the latest models of bullet trains from Oi central overpass, and you may sometimes even see a diagnostic train called “Dr. Yellow.”

Nagisa Forest (Oi Central Seaside Park)

(4-2 Yashio)
You can enjoy the waterway along the Keihin Canal at this metropolitan seaside park. There is a small shelter from which you can observe the many wild birds that flock to the tidelands. You can also enjoy fishing at the manmade beach.

Minatogaoka Terminal Park

(3-1 Yashio)
This metropolitan park stretches across five hectares of land and features a lot of greenery. It has a spacious plaza with stairs, as well as small hills that incorporate natural scenery and ponds. From the observation stand, you can see the large cranes of the cargo wharf. The park also has camping grounds operated by Shinagawa City.
