Shinagawa-ku International Friendship Association (SIFA) Class

1. Japanese-Language Classes for Foreign Residents
Dates and time: Tuesdays and Thursdays, from April 18 through June 29 (total of twenty classes), excluding May 2 and 4.
Morning class: 10:00 a.m. to noon
Afternoon class: 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
Evening class: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Courses:

  • Part I—For those learning Japanese for the first time: Morning, afternoon and evening classes
  • Part II—For those who have studied Japanese before and can write hiragana and katakana: Afternoon and evening classes
  • Part III—For those with everyday conversational skills: Afternoon and evening classes

Location: SIFA
Eligibility: Eighteen foreign residents who live or work in Shinagawa per course (on a first-paid, first-served basis)
Tuition: 7,000 yen per course (textbook fee included)
Babysitting: Preschoolers three years old and older are accepted; five children per morning and afternoon class (on a first-paid, first-served basis)
Notes:
1. 5,000 yen per child
2. There is no babysitting service for the evening classes.

2. Ikebana (Flower Arrangement) Class
Dates and time: Fridays, from April 7 through July 7, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. (total of twelve classes), excluding April 28 and May 5.
Location: SIFA
Eligibility: Twelve foreign residents and eight Japanese residents who live or work in Shinagawa (selected by lottery)
Tuition: 16,000 yen

3. Home Cooking Class
Dates and time: May 20 (Sat.), 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Location: Curian (in front of Oimachi Station)
Program: Myanmarese home cooking
Eligibility: Thirty-six foreign and Japanese residents who live or work in Shinagawa (selected by lottery)
Tuition:1,500 yen
Application deadline: April 18 (Tue.)
Note: Must be received by this date.

Application: Please fill out the application form on SIFA’s website, or send a postcard or fax. Please include the name of the class you wish to join (add the course and time for Japanese-language class), your address, postal code, name (with furigana), age, gender and telephone number that can be contacted during the daytime. If you work in Shinagawa City, please include the name, address and telephone number of your place of employment. If you are a foreign resident, please include your nationality.
