Promote a Sustainable Society to Ensure Our Sustainable Future

Do you lead a life in which producing a lot of garbage and frequently disposing of items is a natural way of life?
It is vital to promote a sustainable society in which we reuse items as recyclable resources before throwing them away. With that in mind, let’s all follow the three Rs: (1) Reduce the amount of garbage and recyclable resources from the source; (2) Reuse items whenever possible; and (3) Recycle items as recyclable resources. Among these three practices, the first two efforts are essential. Separating garbage and recyclable resources properly is also an indispensable part of building a sustainable society. Let’s promote three Rs!

●Efforts to Reduce Garbage
• Try not to buy items you do not need and disposable items
• Do not waste food
• Eat emergency food before the expiration dates and buy only the necessary amount
• Use your own bottle for beverages and bring your own shopping bag when grocery shopping
• Use refillable products

●Reusing Items
• Repair broken items and continue using them
• Buy used items at recycling shops and flea markets
• Print on the back side of used photocopy paper
○ Shinagawa City provides venues for recycling used household items (such as the recycle shop Ribbon), publishes the recycling information bulletin Kuru-kuru (in Japanese), supports flea market groups and conducts city-sponsored flea markets.

●Recycling Programs
Shinagawa City collects the following items as recyclable resources at collection stations.
Recycling is promoted through the collection of recyclable resources.

○ Newspapers/fliers
Bundle with string. These can be disposed of using the newspaper collection bag as well.

○ Magazines
Bundle with string.

○ Cardboard boxes
Fold flat and bundle with string.

○ Paper cartons
Rinse, cut open and dry. Please dispose of cartons with aluminum foil lining together with combustible waste.

○ Paper and paper boxes, such as confection boxes or tissue boxes
Fold flat and bundle with string or place them in a paper bag. Please remove the plastic part of the tissue box before disposal.

○ Bottles for food and beverages
Rinse lightly and place in a transparent or semitransparent bag, or in the designated container. Retail shops collect returnable bottles such as issho-bin sake bottles and beer bottles.
Note: Dispose of broken bottles along with ceramic, glass, and metal items.

○ Cans for food and beverages
Rinse lightly and place in a transparent or semitransparent bag, or in the designated container. Please do not put objects inside.
Note: Dispose of itto-kan cans along with ceramic, glass and metal items.

○ Plastic PET Bottles
Rinse lightly and place in a transparent or semitransparent bag.
Notes:
1. Remove the caps and labels and dispose of them along with plastic containers/wrapping.
2. Please do not put objects inside PET bottles.

○ Clean plastic containers/wrapping
Rinse lightly and place in a transparent or semitransparent bag.
Notes:
1. This applies to items with the identifying “Plastic” mark.
2. Dispose of other plastic items—such as dirty plastic containers/wrapping, toys, stationery and sundries—along with combustible waste.

○ Fluorescent lights that are not broken
To prevent damage, please place fluorescent lights in the box or case you purchased them in, or wrap them in newspaper. Lay items down at the recyclable resource station to keep them from breaking.
Note: Dispose of broken items along with ceramic, glass, and metal items.

○ Dry cell batteries (such as sizes D through N and square-shaped 9V ones)
Place the batteries in a transparent or semitransparent bag before disposal.

○ Mercury thermometers and devices for measuring blood pressure
Place the items in the cases you purchased them in, and label them “kiken” (dangerous) or “suigin” (mercury) before disposal.
Notes:
1. In the case of broken items, place them in a bag, label the bag “kiken” (dangerous) and dispose of them along with ceramic, glass, and metal items.
2. You should dispose of digital thermometers along with ceramic, glass and metal items as in the past.

● Please dispose of garbage and recyclable resources properly.
• Combustible waste (collected from each household)
• Ceramic, glass, and metal items (collected from each household)
• Large-sized waste (fees are charged; collected on a reservation basis)
