Discovering the Attractive Qualities of Shinagawa!

Ebara area

The Ebara district is a popular residential area in Shinagawa City, and a primary goal for the city is to come up with disaster prevention and reduction policies to ensure that all generations can live here comfortably, safely and with peace of mind.
One notable characteristic of this district is that the number of busy shopping areas, including Togoshi-Ginza, Musashi-Koyama and Nakanobu. The bustling crowds filling these shopping areas enrich the daily lives of people in the community. City residents also love the rich natural greenery of Togoshi Park, Bunko-no-mori and Rinshinomori Park—oases that bring relaxation to their lives.

Togoshi Park

Even Feudal Lords Likely Strolled Here during the Edo Period

Togoshi Park-1

Togoshi Park’s circular promenade was constructed using the remaining garden at the residence of the Hosokawa clan, feudal lords during the Edo Period (1603–1867) from the Higo region (present-day Kumamoto Prefecture). With a lake in the center as well as a ravine, a waterfall and an artificial hill, the promenade is designed to encourage contemplative, companionable strolls. The front gate known as Yakuimon, the east gate known as Kabuki-mon and other structures still offer traces of the clan’s garden.
The park has trees and plants that bloom seasonally, including plum, cherry, rhododendron and ginkgo. In autumn, the park is known and loved by city residents as a place to enjoy the blooms of sasanqua camellias and Himalayan cherry blossoms, as well as the leaves dressed in their autumn colors.

Bunko-no-mori

Spend Time Relaxing on the Grassy Lawn!

Bunko-no-mori

Bunko-no-mori was constructed on the former site of the National Institute of Japanese Literature. Mitsui Bunko (Mitsui Library), a valuable structure dating back to the Taisho Period (1912–26), remains in a corner of the park. Togoshi Park and this area were both originally part of the Hosokawa clan’s residence. There are a lot of cherry and other trees in the park, as well as a lake, and the surroundings are great for a leisurely walk. Hidamari-no-Hiroba (Sunny Spot Plaza), Komorebi-no-Hiroba (Sunlight-through-the-Trees Plaza) and Ikoi-no-Hiroba (Oasis Plaza) are full of natural greenery, and you can relax on the grassy lawn or on a bench.
