【Disaster-Preparedness Day】
September 1 each year is designated as "Disaster-Preparedness Day." In addition to commemorating the day in 1923 when the Great Kanto Earthquake struck (with a magnitude of 7.9 on the Richter Scale), based on the calendar the date also falls upon the Nihyaku-to-ka, a day on which typhoons are said to strike (it actually being calculated as the 210th day from the coming of spring). It is felt to be a time of year when preparedness in response to earthquakes and typhoons, high tides and tsunami, cannot be forgotten.
As to the purpose of "Disaster-Preparedness Day," it is a day to consider what can be done in advance to prevent disasters, and what should be done to minimize any damage; it is also a day of activity, for thinking how best to prepare for disasters both at home and in the workplace.
