Reduce Garbage by Following the Three Rs

It is vital to change from being a disposable society into a recycling one in which we reuse items as recyclable resources before throwing them away. With that in mind, let’s all follow the three Rs: (1) Reduce the amount of garbage from the source; (2) Reuse items whenever possible; and (3) Recycle items as recyclable resources. Among these three practices, the first two efforts are essential. Separating garbage and recyclable resources properly is also an indispensable part of building a recycling society. Let’s do all we can to reduce garbage!

Efforts to Reduce Garbage
• Bring your own shopping bag when grocery shopping
• Use refillable products
• Try not to buy items you do not need
• Buy items with less wrapping/packaging
Shinagawa City conducts educational/awareness programs about garbage reduction at environmental classes and during lectures at various venues upon request, and also offers subsidy programs for the purchase of kitchen garbage disposals.

Reusing Items
• Repair broken items and continue using them
• Buy used items at recycling shops and flea markets
• Print on the back side of used photocopy paper
Shinagawa City provides venues for recycling used household items (such as the recycle shop Ribbon), publishes the recycling information bulletin Kuru-kuru (in Japanese), supports flea market groups and conducts city-sponsored flea markets.
