A Guide to Shinagawa City Libraries

There are 10 municipal libraries in Shinagawa City with various types of materials, such as books, newspapers, magazines, and CDs. You can view and borrow these materials free of charge. Why not take advantage of your local municipal library's many resources?

● Make Use of Shinagawa City Libraries
☆Registration
You must have a library card to borrow or read/view library materials or browse the Internet using the library's computers. Anyone can register for a card, so please go to your local Shinagawa City library branch with some form of identification showing your name and address (such as a residence card, special permanent resident certificate, driver's license, health insurance card, or student ID card) and apply.
Note: The library card is valid for one year, and can be renewed. If your card is not used for two years (i.e., you borrow no materials during that period), it is considered null and void.

☆Number of Items and Borrowing Period
You can borrow a total of twenty items—books and audio-visual materials combined—from any Shinagawa City library for up to two weeks.
Notes: 1. Videos are only available at the Shinagawa and Ebara libraries. You can borrow a maximum of four videos.
2. DVDs are only available at the Shinagawa, Ebara, Oi, and Gotanda libraries. You can borrow a maximum of four DVDs.

☆Returning Borrowed Items
You can return borrowed items to any Shinagawa City library, regardless of which library they came from. If the library is closed, please place books and magazines in the library's book drop.
Note: Please do not place videos, CDs, DVDs, and other similar items in the book drop.

☆Children's Corner
You can borrow books for children at any library (Shinagawa Library has some English-language picture books). In addition, there is a weekly event for preschoolers and elementary school children where they can enjoy storytelling with pictures (kamishibai) and picture books.

☆Use of Computers
Each library has computers with Internet access, and they can be used free of charge for one hour per person (Please note that there is no printer). The Shinagawa and Osaki libraries also have computers for searching various databases, such as newspaper and magazine articles, laws and regulations, and judicial precedents.
