Collection of Garbage and Recyclable Resources

Shinagawa City collects garbage and recyclable resources according to type. While garbage is collected from each household, recyclable resources are gathered from recyclable resource collection stations. In both cases, please follow the designated schedule and location, and dispose of items by 8:00 a.m. The types of items are as follows:

Combustible Waste (individual household collection twice a week, except in some areas)
・ Kitchen waste, small amounts of tree debris, and grass and flowers: Drain all of liquid
・ Paper scraps and disposable diapers: Remove human waste from diapers
・ Kitchen oil: Either soaked up with cloth or paper or hardened using a solidifying agent
・ Contaminated plastic containers and wrapping and other plastics
・ Rubber and leather items

Ceramics, Glass, and Metals (individual household collection twice a month)
・ Ceramic items, metal items, broken fluorescent lights, light bulbs, knives, glass items, mirrors, etc.: Place all items together in a transparent or semitransparent bag so the contents can be seen. Wrap hazardous items in paper (waste newspaper, etc.) and label them “キケン” (kiken; dangerous).
・ Gas cassettes, spray cans, and lighters: Place them in a transparent or semitransparent bag so the contents can be seen and separate from any container used for ceramic and metal items. If the item is not empty, please write “なかみいり” (nakami-iri; container not empty).
Note: Soil, sand, and rocks are not collected. Please consult the Shinagawa Trash and Recycling Collection Office.

Recyclable Resources (collected once a week)
・ Newspapers, flyers, magazines, books, cardboard, milk cartons, paper boxes (such as for confections or tissue paper): Fold items according to type and bundle with string.
・ Bottles, cans, and plastic PET bottles that contained food or beverages: Remove caps and labels, rinse and dry, then place items according to type in the designated container or a transparent or semitransparent bag so the contents can be seen.
・ Plastic containers and wrapping materials that are not dirty (such as polystyrene foam, plastic PET bottle caps, and trays, with the plastic mark〔 mark 〕): Rinse lightly with water and place items in a transparent or semitransparent bag so the contents can be seen.
・ Unbroken fluorescent lights: Place them in the box or case they were purchased in, or wrap them in paper (waste newspaper, etc.) before disposal.
・ Dry-cell batteries: Place them in a transparent or semitransparent bag so the contents can be seen.
・ Mercury thermometers and devices for measuring blood pressure: Place items in an unbreakable case before disposal.
Notes: 1. Retail outlets also collect returnable bottles.
2. Items that are broken, have objects inside, or are dirty cannot be recycled.
3. Please use the recycle boxes at cooperating stores to dispose of rechargeable and button-type batteries.
4. Local efforts are also conducted to collect old clothes, used kitchen oil, and used gardening soil at 29 locations in the city on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

Large-sized Waste (fees charged; handled on an application basis)
“Large-sized waste” refers to items measuring 30 cm or longer on any side, such as furniture. To dispose of your item, you can either ask the waste reception center staff to pick it up in front of your home (apartments and condominiums have a waste collection corner or other place designated for large-sized waste collection) or bring the item on a Sunday to the place the waste reception center designates.
